VAL DE SOUTO
The Colleiteiro family runs The Val de Souto winery since 1840 with a lot of passion and dedication. Six generations devoted their lives to the winemaking process. José Manuel Blanco, now 60 years old, operated his entire life in the vineyards and inherited the winery in 2002. His years of experience and craftsmanship, combined with the latest technologies introduced by award-winning oenologist Pablo Estévez, ensure the creation of high-quality, outstanding wines.
José has no employees. He alone is responsible for the entire winemaking process, from the maintenance of the vineyards to the wine’s development and bottling. For the harvest, his family lends him a helping hand.
The winery doesn’t buy any grapes. Each wine is produced from its own grapes, and the wines are estate-bottled.
THE VINEYARD
The Colleiteiro winery, and its 1,73 hectares of vineyards, is located in a small village in the South of Galicia called Souto (Castrelo de Mino, Ourense).
The vineyards are between 15 and 40 years old. The composition of the soils varies: some are from granite, while others constitute predominantly of slate. This diversity attributes to each wine’s personality and distinguished character.
All grapes are hand-picked with the uttermost care at the optimal time. The family harvests each parcel separately to ensure the best quality of the grapes. The grapes ferment in hundred-year-old chestnut wood barrels with a capacity of about 3000 liters. After fermentation, José separates the wine from its paste and lets it rest for another four months in wood before bottling.
